How Do CertainTeed, Diamond Kote, Everlast Advanced Composite Siding, James Hardie, and LP SmartSide Siding Warranties Compare?

June 19, 2026 | By Pat Ward

There are a lot of siding options on the market, each with their own limitations and warranties. Maybe you know what siding you want, but aren’t sure what protections come with it. Maybe you know you want siding with a lifetime warranty, but don’t know which manufacturers offer that. What you do know is that you want your home and your purchase to be protected.

Since 1972, we at C&L Ward have completed over 2,300 siding jobs. We install a variety of siding materials from CertainTeed, Everlast Advanced Composite, and Diamond Kote. We believe that all homeowners deserve to have their questions answered and understand what services are included with their purchase.

In this article, we compare the warranties and coverage of popular siding choices in Michigan: CertainTeed, Diamond Kote, Everlast Advanced Composite Siding, James Hardie, and LP SmartSide. The order in which these manufacturers appear is simply alphabetical, and is not a rating of any kind.

Furthermore, this article is not legal advice. Our words do not replace written warranties provided by the product manufacturer. It is for educational purposes only and, by the time you’re done reading, you’ll have a better understanding of how different siding warranties compare.

Table of Contents

Brands We Compare

In this article, we compare the warranties and coverage of five siding manufacturers: CertainTeed, Diamond Kote, Everlast Advanced Composite Siding, James Hardie, and LP SmartSide.

The order in which these manufacturers appear is not a ranking of any kind. Companies are simply listed in alphabetical order.

Some manufacturers offer different warranties depending on location or add-ons such as custom colors. For the sake of clarity, we identify the exact warranties examined in this article below:

CertainTeed

CertainTeed offers warranties on CERTAplank and Reverse Board & Batten, Cedar Impressions, CertaWrap, and more. Here, we only refer to their “Warranty | Vinyl Siding,” CertainTeed’s Limited Lifetime warranty on Vinyl Siding Products.

Diamond Kote

Diamond Kote siding is unique, as it is not wholly manufactured by Diamond Kote. Rather, Diamond Kote purchases raw LP SmartSide and finishes the engineered wood with their own proprietary finish.

In other words, the base siding is made by LP SmartSide, and Diamond Kote adds their own finish before selling the completed product. As Diamond Kote utilizes LP SmartSide products, Diamond Kote’s 50-Year product Warranty and LP’s 50-Year product Warranty are identical.

Diamond Kote offers an additional 30-Year No Fade Warranty on Solid, DuoBlend Premium, and custom colors, a 15-Year No Fade Warranty on the WoodMark Collection only, and a 50-Year product Warranty. For the sake of this article, we will examine the contents of Diamond Kote’s 30-Year Warranty

Everlast Advanced Composite Siding

The “Everlast Advanced Composite Siding Limited Lifetime Warranty” is Everlast’s manufacturer’s warranty. Everlast siding is manufactured by Chelsea Building Products. At the time of publication, this Limited Lifetime Warranty is the only warranty Cherlsea offers on Everlast siding.

James Hardie

This article looks at James Hardie’s “30-Year HZ5 Limited Siding Warranty.” This warranty applies to most of the northern United States. We will not analyze the 30-Year HZ10 Limited Siding Warranty, which covers the southern U.S. and the West Coast.

LP SmartSide

LP SmartSide offers a “Prorated 50-Year Limited Warranty” on trim and siding. Separately, they offer warranties on Accessories & Non-Standard Applications, as well as LP SmartSide ExpertFinish.

What is Protected Under a CertainTeed, Diamond Kote, Everlast, James Hardie, or LP SmartSide Warranty?

Each of the warranties discussed in this article are manufacturer’s warranties. This means that they protect against failures that are a direct result of the manufacturing process. They do not protect against failures caused by installation, unauthorized modifications, or other acts of misuse.

Your contractor may offer labor or installation warranties. These warranties may last longer or shorter than the manufacturer warranties, and will protect you from any failures caused by the installation (but not failures caused by the manufacturing process).

The following table shows the options each manufacturer offers and may provide if you experience a manufacturing defect while under warranty. The decision to repair, replace, or refund is up to the manufacturer—not the customer or the installer.

Manufacturer Depending on the defect, the manufacturer may: CertainTeed Pay to repair, replace, refinish, or coat any vinyl siding product it determines has a manufacturing defect. Refund the amount paid by the original property owner for the Vinyl Siding Products plus the cost of the labor of the original installation. Diamond Kote Provide you with Diamond Kote coating materials to recoat non-conforming areas. Provide you with replacement Product containing Diamond Kote Finish to replace non-conforming areas. Reimburse you for coating materials which you purchase to recoat the non-conforming areas up to a maximum of $0.25 per square foot of defective Finish. Everlast Repair, or replace Everlast® Siding determined by Chelsea to be defective. In lieu of repair, or replacement, Chelsea reserves the right to refund to the Homeowner(s) the portion of original cost for the defective Everlast® Siding plus the cost associated with the initial installation of the defective Everlast® Siding. James Hardie Issue a refund for or replace the defective portion of the Product. Reimburse the Covered Person for up to twice the original retail cost of the defective portion of the Product. LP SmartSide If the Product has not been installed, LP will, at its option: Refund the original purchase price of the affected Product. Replace the affected Product. After installation, LP will: During the first 5 years from the date of installation, compensate the Owner for the cost of labor and material to repair or replace the affected Product, including the reasonable cost of labor and material. During the 6th through 50th years from the date of installation, compensate the Owner for the material cost of the affected Product or a similar wood-based siding or trim product (no labor or other charges shall be paid) less an annual pro-rata reduction of 2.22% per year.

What is Not Protected Under a CertainTeed, Diamond Kote, Everlast, James Hardie, or LP SmartSide Warranty?: Limitations and Exclusions

Each warranty provides coverage with different limitations, though all mean the same thing: Only manufactured defects in the products supplied are covered. Any misuse, improper maintenance, pest-inflicted damage, acts of God (extreme weather, such as hurricane, tornado, windstorm, lightning, fire, earthquake, or flood), or other damages beyond the control of the manufacturer are not covered. Note that, if your siding isn’t installed by a professional, it might not be under warranty at all.

However, these products do vary in what they offer in way of hail damage. The following comparison chart depicts hail-related limitations and exclusions from each manufacturer.

Manufacturer Is Hail Damage Covered? Hail Damage Limitations CertainTeed Yes You must first seek replacement or repair through homeowners’ or other applicable insurance. If the cost to repair or replace your CertainTeed siding is more than what insurance will pay (excluding any insurance deductible), CertainTeed will reimburse you for the difference. Diamond Kote 30-Year No Fade Warranty: No, 50-Year product Warranty: Yes (See LP) Everlast Yes If you have no insurance, or your insurance does not fully cover any hail damages, Everlast will provide replacement materials. James Hardie Yes James Hardie may issue a refund for or replace the defective portion of the Product if damaged by hail. LP SmartSide Yes If your siding is damaged by hail greater than 1.75 inches (45 mm) in diameter, LP may pay for the cost of materials not covered by insurance.

How Do I Safely Maintain My Siding Under Warranty?

Most siding can be cleaned with a garden hose and soft brush or cloth. If a stubborn stain does require a stronger detergent or cleaner, test the product on a secluded area of your home before using it in a visible area, just in case the chemicals have any ill effects.
