What is Therma-Tru’s Door Warranty?: A Quick Guide
Therma-Tru offers two warranties: the Lifetime Limited Warranty and the Transferable Lifetime Limited Warranty. As these warranties are both provided directly from Therma-Tru, they are manufacturer’s warranties. This means that they cover defects or failures that are a direct result of the manufacturing process.
These warranties do not protect against failures or damages from improper installation. Failure to properly install your Therma-Tru door will void your warranty. To ensure you are protected, hire a trained and Therma-Tru Certified Installer.
Note: Your installer may offer their own workmanship warranty, which can protect you from installation-related damages.

How Long Does a Therma-Tru Door Warranty Last?
Both warranties offer lifetime protection for the original purchaser for as long as you own the home. The Transferable Lifetime Limited Warranty offers 10 years of protection for the subsequent homeowner. This 10-year period begins when the second homeowner takes possession of the property.
What do Therma-Tru Door Warranties Cover?: In-depth
Therma-Tru’s Lifetime Limited Warranty and Transferable Lifetime Limited Warranty both cover door panel(s), glass and lite frames, multi-point locking mechanisms, sills and hinges, corner seal pads, bottom sweeps and weather stripping, composite door frames, and storm door systems.
If your Therma-Tru door system fails to perform because of a manufacturing defect, Therma-Tru may take one of three paths to resolve the issue:
- Repair the component(s).
- Provide replacement component(s) to you or a Therma-Tru designated dealer.
- Refund you the purchase price.
Any repaired or replaced components are covered under the same warranty for the remaining warranty period.
NOTE: C&L Ward’s Peace of Mind guarantee backs all doors installed by C&L Ward, including Therma-Tru door systems. This guarantee protects your labor and installation but does not cover any part of the manufacturing process.
What Mistakes Do Homeowners Make that Void Their Therma-Tru Warranties?
1. Improper installation and/or the use of non-approved components
“This Limited Warranty applies only when the Product is entirely composed of genuine Therma-Tru components.”
–Therma-Tru Lifetime Limited Warranty
Therma-Tru is very strict about installations. Something as simple as using the wrong brand of screw can invalidate your warranty. If you or someone you hire does not install your door system to Therma-Tru’s standards, any damages incurred (related or not) are not covered by Therma-Tru.
SCENARIO:
A homeowner hires a handyman to install a Therma-Tru door panel and an Andersen screen door in the same Therma-Tru door frame. Since the screen door is an Andersen product (and not manufactured by Therma-Tru), the improper installation and failure to use approved components has voided your warranty.
2. An unfinished or incomplete door system
All doors must be properly finished, meaning they need to be primed and painted or stained on all 6 sides. If a certified installer applies a Therma-Tru door bottom sweep (gasket) to the bottom of your door, it only needs to be finished on 5 sides.
Fiberglass doors must be finished within 6 months, steel doors and wood surfaces within two weeks, and PVC and composite door frames within 30 days of installation. Damaged products that were not properly finished, or were not finished within these timeframes, are not protected.
A door is primed and painted inside C&L Ward’s in-house finishing department.
3. Clean and maintain finishes in accordance with manufacturer recommendations
Therma-Tru has shared a variety of instructional videos on their Care & Maintenance page. These videos show recommended practices and how to best look after each component of your door, from locks to hinges.
You should regularly inspect weather stripping and seals for damage, and replace and recaulk if necessary. If stain or paint is discolored or damaged, you can re-stain or lightly sand and repaint. In most instances, the appearance of your door can easily be improved with a mild cleaning solution, warm water, and a soft cloth. Never use abrasive cleaners or other harsh chemicals to clean your door or hardware.
What is not included in a Therma-Tru Warranty?
Beyond the three cases outlined above, Therma-Tru names several circumstances not protected under warranty. These include, but are not limited to:
- Improper pre-installation storage, including inadequate shelter or inadequate venting of shipping wrap in humid locations.
- Glass covered with aftermarket window films.
- Product reinstalled after removal from its original installation, except in connection with proper and timely maintenance of components which incur normal wear and tear, such as the weatherstrip, door bottom sweep (gasket), and corner seal pads.
- Harsh natural environmental conditions, including by example from substantial exposure to sun, salt spray, or airborne pollutants; other severe conditions including exposure to harsh chemicals or solvents, such as acidic brick washes or stucco leach; or damage from vandalism, or domestic or wild animals.
- Acts of God that include, but are not limited to, stresses, high winds, floods, fire and other conditions that exceed Product designs and testing specifications.
Common Myths About Therma-Tru Warranties

Questions to Ask Before Purchasing a Therma-Tru Door System
Is my installation protected?
Therma-Tru’s manufacturer warranty covers defects in the product itself, not installation or workmanship errors. Ask your contractor whether they offer a separate workmanship or labor warranty.
What labor warranty does the contractor provide?
Some contractors offer no workmanship warranty, while others offer coverage ranging from a few years to lifetime protection. Understanding this distinction can save thousands in future repair costs.
Is the person performing my installation a Therma-Tru Certified Installer?
Therma-Tru Certified Installers meet manufacturer training requirements and help to ensure that your purchase is warranted. You can locate certified installers near you with Therma-Tru’s Certified Installer Locator.
What maintenance requirements must I follow?
Ask for written maintenance instructions and warranty documentation before installation so you understand what cleaning methods, modifications, and repairs could affect coverage.
FAQs About Therma-Tru Warranties
Are Therma-Tru warranties transferable?
Yes, some Therma-Tru warranties are transferable. The Transferable Therma-Tru Lifetime Limited Warranty can be transferred to a second owner. The Therma-Tru Lifetime Limited Warranty, with the exception of the 10-Year Transferable Warranty on composite door frames, is not.
Do Therma-Tru warranties include installation?
No, the Therma-Tru Limited Warranty does not protect workmanship. Therma-Tru does not cover any labor, refinishing, repair, or shipping costs. A workmanship warranty from your installer will protect your installation.
What common mistakes void a Therma-Tru warranty?
Common causes include improper installation, aftermarket modifications, and improper maintenance.
Do Therma-Tru warranties cover broken glass?
Therma-Tru does not cover any accidental breakage. Scratches or other imperfections may be covered if they are readily observable from more than 4 feet away.
Is the Therma-Tru warranty worth it?
For many homeowners, Therma-Tru’s warranty provides meaningful protection against manufacturing defects, especially when paired with a contractor’s workmanship warranty.
