Who are the best deck installers in southeastern Michigan? How do you know if a decking installer is qualified?

More than a decade ago, we at C&L Ward expanded our business to include decking services. We offer a variety of ways to customize and preserve your custom deck, whether it be a restoration or a new installation.

We’ve compiled this list of the best deck installers of 2026 to help you compare options, to see what standards we hold ourselves to, and to show how competitors compare against that same criteria.

Why Trust This List of Deck Installers?

We chose the installers that we did based on location, longevity, ratings, and number of reviews.

You’ll note below that we are one of the companies on this list. Why did we include ourselves? Because we meet the same evaluation criteria that we would want for any decking project at our own homes.

What Criteria We (And You) Should Consider

  • Reputation and Reviews: In similar articles for other services, we’ve included reviews from Google, GuildQuality, Angi, and Houzz. Here, we only look at Google reviews. This is because the five companies we chose are all rated on Google Reviews, but don’t share much overlap on other sites.

It is important to note that there are some companies with many great reviews on a variety of platforms that have not made our list. This may be because these companies are not recognized by the Better Business Bureau. All businesses we recommend will be BBB accredited, with an A+ rating.

  • Years of Operation: Longevity is key. It can be hard to know if a company that has only existed for six years will still be around to back its 50-year warranty. That being said, we have recognized some younger businesses in this article. After all, we were a young company once, too.
  • Who installs the decks—employees or subcontractors?: A company that employs its own staff may be able to ensure higher quality control and smoother communications during projects.
  • Materials & Types of Decks Offered: Composite decking is the most popular, and every seller on our list offers some version of a composite blend. We understand not every client wants a composite deck, though, and have also included sellers with PVC and wood options.
  • Warranty or Coverage: Decking should be covered by a manufacturer’s warranty, though some installers may offer additional protections such as labor warranties.
  • Financing Options: Cost is often one of the top concerns for homeowners. We’ve made sure to check if the installers in our picks offer financing options.

The names compiled below are simply listed in alphabetical order; they are not ranked in any way. We have only included licensed and insured businesses.

What Should Homeowners Know Before Hiring a Deck Installer?

  • What Types of Decks are Commonly Installed in Southeastern Michigan?
      • Homeowners should research different material options and gather an idea of what type will be the best fit for their home: composite decking, PVC decking, or pressure-treated wood.
  • How Long Does Deck Installation Usually Take?
      • The timeline for a decking installation will vary depending on the scope of the project. A smaller, 10 ’x 10’ deck can take a couple of days, whereas a larger project may take two or three weeks. The full process, which includes designing, permitting, and a post-install inspection, may take two to three months.
  • Can decks be installed year-round?
      • Decking installation may or may not be seasonal, depending on which company you choose. At C&L Ward, we install decks year-round. If you’re thinking of a fall or winter installation, be sure to look at contractors who do the same.
  • Should I Choose a Local or Regional Deck Contractor?
      • A local contractor (smaller, serves the local community) may have a better understanding of your area’s building codes and permitting. However, they may have limited capacity and longer wait times, or offer fewer resources.
      • A regional contractor (larger, serves multiple counties) may have more crews and access to specialized equipment. A good regional contractor will not assign a team to more than one project at once. However, a contractor who does may experience delays.
  • What Red Flags Should I Watch Out For?
      • A contractor who asks for too large an up-front payment (more than 25%), asks you to handle permitting, has few or no reviews, refuses to show past work, and/or has no proof of insurance is one to avoid.[1] Never pay only in cash, without a contract, or without a permit plan.
  • Is the “Cheapest Deck Installer” Ever Worth It?
      • While a contractor asking for too much money may be a red flag, so is a contractor asking for too little. Installers and products are two quick ways to cut costs, meaning you may be receiving lower-quality craftsmanship or materials. Unsafe construction or quick-to-rot wood can lead to high repair costs in the near future.
  • Why do Decking Installer Quotes Vary?
      • A number of factors can affect the cost of your deck: material, design, laborers, and even warranty.
      • A composite deck, for example, will cost less than a PVC deck. Add-ons, such as a custom, two-story deck with lit rails and privacy walls, will cost more than a standard, single-level deck.
      • A company that uses its own employees to build may cost more than a company that utilizes subcontractors, though an installation made by employees may be covered by an installation or labor warranty in addition to a manufacturer’s warranty.
  • What is the Average Cost of Decking Installation in Michigan?
    • The average cost of a deck in Michigan is $6,845. Decks often fall into the $3,639 to $10,642 range, with a highest average cost of $21,924.[2
    • The average cost of a 10’x10′ deck, or the average cost of a deck done by a qualified and reputable company, will likely fall near the higher end of this range, around $10,000+.
    • Many composite decks (especially with stairs, lighting, rail upgrades, multi-level designs, or permits) will land above the state average. The use of a qualified and reputable installer can raise prices, too. Use these averages as a baseline, not a quote.

What Questions Should Homeowners Ask a Deck Installer?

  1. Are you licensed and insured for decking installations? May I see proof?

A good installer will be licensed and insured. They should be able to provide documentation of this. Check to be sure that the name on any certifications matches the name and other details of the company you’re doing business with.

  2. What’s included in the quote?

A quote will typically consider deck size, material, railings, installation, labor, and warranties. Ask to see if other factors, such as removal, are included or if any necessary costs are excluded from your estimate.

  3. Do you handle permits, local building codes, and inspections?

A good installer will arrange permits and inspections. If your installer tries to skip this step, doesn’t plan to abide by local building codes, or tries to pass these responsibilities on to you, that is a red flag.

  4. What kind of fasteners and hardware will you use? / What brand of railing will you use?

While they are a preference of aesthetic, these details matter! Be sure to ask to see what materials will look like once installed and how they are secured. Maybe you want discrete fasteners, or perhaps you want a certain railing width.

  5. How will you protect my property during construction and/or installation?

Deck installation is a big task. Expect wear lines in your grass (if applicable) and some minor effects in your yard. An installer should be upfront about minor wear, but provide an explanation on how anything more will be avoided.

  6. What is your policy on cleaning up the site at the end of the job?

A good installer will clean up for you once a job is done, and likely tidy up at the end of each day. Installers aren’t landscapers, so ask whether they replant grass and what may not be addressed at the end of a job.

  7. What is the estimated timeline of my project?

A good company should have a dedicated communication team, such as project coordinators, to keep you informed on all timeline updates and notifications on your project.

  8. How do you deal with delays in construction or unexpected issues?

Issues may arise, so communication is key. An installer should let you know when a problem occurs, if they anticipate any delays, and how they plan to address these issues if they arise.

  9. How will you ensure a safe and durable result?

A quality installer will adhere to strict standards within their Structural and Finishing Systems. They should build according to the current International Residential Code (IRC) to ensure public health, safety, and welfare.

  10. What happens if I’m unhappy with my finished deck?

If you’re working with a good installer, this outcome should be rare. A builder should conduct in-home consultations and work with you—the client—throughout every step to ensure the final result is one you can both be proud of. Craftsmanship warranties and other protections are in place to help ensure any issues are resolved to your satisfaction.

  11. Can you walk me through the warranties you offer?

A good installer stands by their product. Be sure to understand any product and workmanship warranties, what’s protected, and what isn’t protected, in full.

  12. Can I see examples of your work?

A trustworthy company will be happy to share its portfolio or examples of past projects with you. You should also look at online reviews and company websites.

How to Choose the Right Deck Installer for Your Michigan Home

Beyond price, consider maintenance expectations, timelines, warranties, and workmanship guarantees.

Create a quote checklist to help compare installers and costs. Read online reviews and check for proof of licensure, certification, and insurance. Ask if work is completed by employees or subcontractors. Ask about timelines, permits, cost of permits, payments, and, if applicable, how old decking will be disposed of (as well as if this cost is included).

Before requesting an estimate, take some time to explore what drives decking prices and understand “How Much Do New Decks Cost in Michigan for 2026?” Consider your budget and the long-term value of the product or material you choose.

Remember, there’s no one “Best Company,” it’s about which company is the best fit for your home, wants, and needs.
