What Criteria We Used To Evaluate Roofing Installation Companies and Why It Matters

We based the companies we selected on the same criteria we hold ourselves to, and the standards we would want in our own homes. We considered buyer-centric factors, including reputation, location, years of service, and warranty.

  • Reputation and Reviews: Reviews are real feedback from real clients. This feedback is highly valuable as it shows the client’s true experience, not what a company merely promises to deliver.
    • Google Reviews: As the largest review platform, we first look here for ratings and reviews.
    • GuildQuality Reviews: Then, if a company uses GuildQuality, we include that rating. GuildQuality sends surveys to clients after a project is completed, creating a platform for hyper-specific feedback on quality of materials, cleanliness & safety, crew organization and professionalism, quality of workmanship, and salesperson knowledge.
    • Angi Reviews: Angi connects local homeowners and local professionals. With location being a key factor, we included these ratings as well.
  • Years of Operation: Longevity shows quality and helps ensure your purchases will still be taken care of in the future. A company that was here yesterday will still be here tomorrow. A company that has been around longer than its warranty will likely still be around to help well past the lifetime of your product.
  • Original Ownership Still in Place: A company managed by the original founders or owners can be indicative of a long-term commitment to business values and quality. Companies that have been bought and sold often aim to please investors or a board of directors, which can lead to prioritizing profits over people.
  • Who installs the roofing – employees or subcontractors?: A company that employs its own staff may be able to ensure higher quality control and smoother communications during projects.
  • Materials & Techniques Used: We prefer Owens Corning, but acknowledge that they may not be the choice for you. We considered companies that offer a variety of brands and materials to give you options.
  • Warranty or Coverage: If your material or the quality of work fails, you deserve to be protected. Products should be covered by a manufacturer’s warranty, though some installers may offer additional protections.
  • Financing Options: Cost is often a top consideration for clients. A variety of payment plans can make decisions more accessible to homeowners.

We also checked that all companies are licensed and insured, are a Better Business Bureau Accredited Business, and have received an “A+” rating from the BBB.

What Questions Should I Ask a Roofing Installer in Michigan?

  • What’s included in your roofing inspection?
    • There’s little point in placing new shingles over a damaged roof, where rot or instability could be lurking underneath. A good roofing installer will inspect your current roof’s sheathing and wood beams for rotting, warping, or damage. They should also look at flashing around chimneys, skylights, dormers, and/or vent pipes and pipe collars, as well as leaks and missing or damaged shingles.
  • What’s included in your roofing quote?
    • A good roofing quote should include a materials list, cleanup and/or removal costs, permits, and the cost of licensing and insurance.[2] Warranties may affect pricing as well, with longer coverage available for a higher cost.
    • Other services may be available, including attic insulation, gutter replacement, attic fan or skylight installation, and even the removal of old satellite dishes. Some services, such as satellite removal, may be free of charge, but these other services will likely not be included in a base quote. If you are looking at one of these additional services, be sure to ask about how it will affect the total price of your project.
  • Are you licensed and insured?
    • A licensed contractor is knowledgeable of local building codes and must follow them, ensuring safety and stability in your home.
    • Hiring an insured contractor will protect you financially from any injuries that may occur, and helps to avoid any damage to your home.
  • Do you subcontract or use in-house crews?
    • A project managed entirely by in-house employees may see better communication and quality control across projects. However, qualified subcontractors (especially those trained by the company you hire) can still provide a quality installation. Be sure to ask who will be working on your home and what their credentials are.
  • What warranty/warranties do they offer?
    • Some warranties ensure the labor or installation on your home, whereas others cover the product itself. Ask which warranties are available on the product you choose, what the warranty will protect, and how long that protection will last.
  • Do you offer multiple financing options?
    • Home exterior projects can be expensive, and roofing is no exception. A roofing repair and installation company will likely offer a variety of financing options to help make payments easier. Be sure to ask which specific options and plans are available.
  • Why are the roofing materials you’re offering the best fit for my home?
    • A company can be a great installer and excellent to work with, but this isn’t helpful if they aren’t able to provide the material that best fits your budget, needs, and home. Be sure to research common roofing materials and compare the strengths and solutions offered by each type.

How to Compare Roofing by Price

It can be overwhelming to shop for a roofing installer, and it can feel especially difficult to trust a business with your home. But by asking the right questions, you can find the company that best fits your needs.
